Fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones passed away on Saturday at the age of 76 from cancer, and although she came from a generation of fantasy authors before Stephenie Meyer‘s time and may not be known by young readers today, she was a pivotal force nonetheless.
I only read two or three of her books, but her mock-encyclopedia The Tough Guide to Fantasyland was one of my absolute favorite books, both as a reader and a writer. I tracked down this book, out of print at the time, in a used bookstore in San Francisco, and held on to it fiercely through college. More »

Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most famous actors of our time, her legendary beauty, style and of course talent was something that was always admired. She gave support to AIDS research by starting a foundation in memory of her close friend Rock Hudson (who died of the disease). She was glamorous, savvy and talented, winning two Oscars. Her nickname was “One Shot Liz” for being able to do a scene in one take, I had to do a double take when reading some of the obits all over the internet. Some are downright hateful, and others brazenly rude. I am appalled. The fact that so many people have forgotten what a star Liz Taylor was is just depressing.

The world lost one of its great animal superstars on Saturday when Knut the Polar Bear collapsed in his enclosure at the Berlin Zoo. Though polar bears can live for up to 30 years in capitivity, Knut was only four years old at the time of his death. We watched this remarkable bear as he grew from tiny little cub to fearsome adult, and he will be sorely missed. Here, we remember Knut. More »
Really sad news today: Dan Gordon-Levitt, whose appearance on the celebrity scene earlier this summer spurned an entire wave of “hot celebrity siblings” trend, has passed away. His brother, Incepetion actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, wrote on his Twitter:

I can’t help but think the death of Anna’s son only a few months ago and now Anna Nicole Smith herself seems so suspicious. Could her former husbands family have done this? What about the two men who claimed to be baby Dannielynne’s father? Could it be that Anna Nicole was suffering depression following the birth of her baby?
The lady herself was surrounded by so much controversy – since her name became known in nearly every home in the U.S…. More »
