Neil Patrick Harris’ Partner David Burtka Is The Newest E! Correspondent

David Burtka has been teasing some big news for the past few days on his Twitter, and now it’s official: He’ll be the newest correspondent for E! News as well as E!’s various specials like Live from the Red Carpet.

The hiring comes from the network’s desire to be a bigger player in the whole breaking-news world. Bringing on David? According to THR, it’s because of his background in acting as well as the industry relationships he’s made over the years.

How far we’ve come from five years ago, when blogs basically pushed Neil Patrick Harris out of the closet after they realized that the random actor guest-starring on How I Met Your Mother was Neil’s secret partner David Burtka. Now David is a household name for any NPH fans, and even played himself in A Very Harold & Kumar 3-D Christmas.

David hasn’t done much acting otherwise, so the cynics in us wonder if he got hired more for his high-profile relationship. (No slam on his talent as an actor—and anyway, he likely will have more ins and connections than a non-celebrity correspondent.) So for the record, we’re excited to see what David brings when he starts his new gig in January.

For now, David is doing his research. Watching how it is done! he tweeted an hour ago. @RyanSeacrest has such an ease and is amazing at what he does! I love learning from the best!

30 Crazy Moments In Britney Spears’ Life In Honor Of Her 30th Birthday

So Britney Spears turned 30 today. Are we the only ones who feel ancient at this news? Hell, I remember bouncing around my room to “Oops… I Did It Again” in fourth grade. And yet it’s not too difficult to envision her as 30, since she’s lived several lifetimes thanks to her tumultuous relationships, mental/emotional instability, and ever-changing image from bubblegum pop girl to trashy hasbeen to somewhat-adjusted woman.

So much nonsense and soul-sucking sadness happened that you’d think her life was a reality show. Then she actually got a reality show. Here’s our roughly chronological journey through the high and low points of Britney’s personal life and career.

1. VIRGINITY WATCH 1999: Long before the Jonas Brothers flashed their purity rings, the media was obsessed with Britney’s maidenhood. She dated *NSYNC leader Justin Timberlake from 1999-2002, and I feel like every news story I read about them was whether they’d popped their respective cherries. It was pretty appalling, actually. They both staunchly claimed to be virgins even though it’s so creepy that grown adults were pestering them about it for years. But in a 2009 SNL skit, Justin basically admitted that he and Britney had slept together.

2. Her first Rolling Stone cover: The first of Britney’s many exclamations that she wasn’t an innocent girl (but still a virgin). To be fair, she did keep her clothes on, but the image — of her splayed out on her bed baring her midriff and hugging a Teletubby — was provocative.

3. Dancing with a snake at the VMAs: The first of many famous performances, she gyrated with a boa to “I’m A Slave 4 U.”

4. The flesh-colored bodysuit at the VMAs: Britney showed us she was “not a girl” and that she needed some “satisfaction.” Boys became men that day.

5. Death hoax: Two Texas DJs reported that Britney and Justin had perished in a car crash. Since this was before the Internet was so prevalent — not to mention Twitter-as-news — it caused quite a panic before her reps could deny it.

6. Crossroads: The enduring story of a small-town girl traveling cross-country with a hot stranger she loses her virginity to. If you can believe it, Zoe Saldana was in this before she became, like, an actual star.

7. Her 55-hour wedding to Jason Alexander: After the Justin break-up, Britney seemed to have poor impulse control when it came to relationships. She wasn’t even dating Jason — they claimed to be childhood friends — when they got hitched at a Vegas chapel. They annulled it a few days later, but we’ll always remember the “wtf” moment.

8. Marrying Kevin Federline: Not only were we boggled that she married Kevin so quickly after the Jason Alexander fiasco, but he just didn’t seem worthy of her. This was our pop princess, after all! She had dated Justin Timberlake, and now this low-life who left his babymama Shar Jackson for her?

9. Britney & Kevin: Chaotic: All those who might’ve wanted an intimate look into Britney and Kevin’s courtship were repulsed by how narcissistic the pop star was.

10. Driving with a baby on her lap: This is where the public view of Trashy Britney began to emerge, when paparazzi snapped her carrying son Sean Preston on her lap. Ironically, she claimed that she had put Sean on her lap because of a frightening run-in with the photogs, but regardless she later owned up to her mistake.

For the Last Time, There Are Not More People Voting for ‘American Idol’ Than for the President

Every year without fail, Ryan Seacrest tells the nation that more votes were cast for Idol than for the most recent presidential election. And every year without fail, a bunch of media outlets pick up this information and write hand-wringing editorials about how our country is doomed. But that assertion is stupid, and this is why.

1. People under 18 can vote for Idol, but not for the president.

2. People can vote multiple times for Idol, but not for the president.

In other words, while there may be more votes cast for Idol than for Obama, there are not more voters. The fact that a couple of people in Hawaii managed to powervote enough to get the godforsaken Jasmine Trias into the finals in season 3 does not mean that democracy is dead or that America is going to hell in a handbasket with the Coca-Cola logo on it. If we really want to get comparable numbers, let’s open up presidential voting to the entire internet and see what happens.

Stanley Tucci Cast as Caesar Flickerman in ‘The Hunger Games’

Although I was holding out hope for him to play the sinister President Snow, I’m excited to see that Stanley Tucci will be part of the Hunger Games universe regardless. The actor has just signed on to play Capitol celebrity Caesar Flickerman, who conducts pre-Games interviews with each of the 24 tributes. (Think Ryan Seacrest, but with his hair, suit, and makeup dyed a new color each year.)

Caesar’s a fascinating character, since he represents both sides of the series’ emphasis on the media: He’s an object of ridicule by Katniss and the other tributes, but he also aids the kids in spinning their life stories to the most sympathetic version that will garner attention and gifts from viewers. Furthermore, since we were discussing on the last Fireside Chat how Lionsgate may choose to make the movie more third-person — that is, showing the action outside of the Arena — Tucci could have an integral role in depicting the commentary happening alongside the reality-show carnage.

Although I’m sure this character will be unique from the many personalities he’s taken on, right now I’m sort of feeling Nigel from The Devil Wears Prada:

The Hunger Games comes to theaters on March 23, 2012.

Lionsgate continues to confound us with its casting choices for the March 2012 adaptation of The Hunger Games. Since this epic story comes to us in a book, each of the thousands of readers has a specific view of what each character should look like, yet you would think that there would be enough similarity for an actor to satisfy most fans. But instead, the movie’s casting directors seem to have chosen actors — Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson — who look the complete opposite from their characters’ physical descriptions. We’ve decided to help out and provide actors who may have the chops to play these characters, but look nothing like them.

Shocker: Kim Kardashian’s First Single, ‘Jam’ Totally Sucks

Oh Kim Kardashian, stick to what you’re good at — you know, reality TV, having a nice butt, and tweeting salad endorsements. Kim’s first single, “Jam,” which she admitted to Ryan Seacrest was “out of her comfort zone,” is laughably bad and nearly unlistenable. By which we mean: get ready for this to be the club hit of 2011!

American Idol: More Of A Sham Than We Thought?

In its tenth season now, FOX’s American Idol behemoth franchise has undeniably mastered the tricks of emotionally manipulating the audience. (See: this season’s contestant Chris Medina, the Detroit singer who has a fiancee in a wheelchair.)

Not all of the show’s tricks are apparent to the audience. And yet surprisingly few wannabe American Idols have dished about the behind the scenes happenings of auditioning to be on FOX’s hit show. But an anonymous blogger who calls herself “Maria Saint” has written a very interesting behind the scenes explanation of what goes down at an American Idol cattle call.

For starters, contestants are pre-sorted by talent before they even audition, there’s a fake Ryan Seacrest who does exit interviews, and the judges don’t actually see most of the wannabe singers perform.

Everyone knows reality TV is mostly a sham. But it’s interesting to learn that when American Idol producers sort contestants to try out for the show, they include a letter system that tips off the judges about how they should react. According to Maria:

“The first mark is a letter, either an N, a K, or a Y. The Y means that you are a good singer, a yes, and will likely make it all the way to the final round if you play your cards right. K I call Keeper, and it is also a mark of a good singer. K’s are not as impressive as Y’s but is good nonetheless, and anything good is good, right? N’s are another story. N’s are no’s and it basically means you are bad. You’re not a bad person and you may not even be a bad singer but in the idol world you are a bad singer to them and that’s what you’re going to be made to be.”

There’s a lot more, including the fact that a fake Ryan Seacrest interviews many of the contestants, and they are all taught a song and filmed screwing up for the blooper reel that FOX airs. As RealityBlurred puts it:

“the show gathers footage of auditions that are not in front of the judges or Ryan Seacrest but has the ability to edit them to make it look like those people sang in front of the judges (combined with reaction shots from the judges) and then said something to Seacrest, when in fact, none of that happened.”
