  She didn’t look like other moms on the playground, I realized as I shaded my hand over my eyes and squinted across the park in the West Hollywood recreation complex. She was tall and thin, her long hair loose over her shoulders, wearing all black, even in the 90-degree heat. She was watching as a dark-haired boy darted around her. Occasionally, she’d race after him, which was so different than most West Hollywood moms I’d observed, who, if they were at the playground at all, would mostly be gossiping with other moms or squinting at their iPhones.
