Julianne Moore Nails Sarah Palin In The Game Change Trailer

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Several months ago the first photo was released for HBO‘s TV movie Game Change, showing Julianne Moore dressed as Sarah Palin down to the snazzy glasses and the later copycatted updo. But once we knew she could walk the walk, the public needed to know if she could talk the talk.

Now the first teaser for Game Change has been released, featuring Ed Helms as John McCain searching for his perfect running mate. So, is this our beloved and reviled Sarah?

You betcha! Julianne’s got the accent and meticulous enunciation down, as well as that unwavering stare. And we see only one line from her—imagine her saying some of Palin’s more famous catchphrases like “I can see Russia from my house” and “John’s a maverick”!

What I love is that HBO is unashamedly putting this movie forward with the premise that the Republican party hired Palin as a stunt: Take the pretty hockey mom from a less-noticed state and charm the pants off the GOP. Woody Harrelson plays the aide who spots Sarah at a fundraiser or somesuch and watches in wonderment as the crowd goes wild for her. Really, in many ways it’s not that different from his Hunger Games role where he has to train Jennifer Lawrence‘s character to be amiable and sympathetic to the Capitol citizens.

Speaking of young women in the public eye, we hope that the movie focuses not just on the Republican candidates but also their teenage daughters. Tiffany Thornton and Melissa Farman have been cast as Meghan McCain and Bristol Palin, respectively; we trust HBO to provide a realistic take on Meghan’s extensive tweeting and Bristol’s pregnancy.

Game Change will premiere on HBO in March 2012.

Sarah Palin is poison. We all know that. Ingest a bit of her venom and your body will instantly seize up and send you running toward the woods with a rifle in your hands and an American Flag around your waist. As poisonous as Sarah Palin may be, however, I have never felt the need to turn my body into a permanent warning sticker admonishing her existence.

But it looks like someone begs to differ! Evidently, a tattoo artist in San Jose was offering to ink this image for free on anyone who’d take it — and one man took him up on it.

He now works for the FDA.

TrustoCorp’s Fake Gossip Magazines Are Amazing Street Art

Can you tell which of these covers are fake? They’re the ones with extra-lurid colors and headlines that any well-informed pop culture fan would know are untrue, though entirely possible. “Urban collective” TrustoCorp is behind this guerilla art project: They sneaked these faux-covers into newsstands in New York, Hollywood, and both towns’ major airports.

We love Banksy‘s high-minded stuff, but sometimes we need our street art to be a scathing commentary on our obsession with celebrities and their flaws. You know that if they could, TrustoCorp would do the same with blogs — except that we (as the celebrity-obsessed public) have a pesky tendency to believe that everything online is real, so that would turn out to be more shitshow than prank.

We’ve known that Discovery was smart about pop culture when it picked up Sarah Palin’s Alaska last year, and even before now the network has jazzed up its annual Shark Week with celebrity promos and cult movies. But I have to raise a glass to this year’s ad, which sets fearsome shots of dead-eyed sharks chomping on boats and people to Lady Gaga‘s single “Show Me Your Teeth.”

This is a good step — keep Glee from hogging all the Gaga songs and distribute them among all the networks’ ads. “Monster” for Teen Wolf! “LoveGame” for The Bachelorette!

5 Ways to Make a Cabbage Patch Kids TV Movie Not Suck

The Cabbage Patch Kids, either the most coveted toys of your childhood or the stuff of your adolescent nightmares, are returning to the small screen. THR reports that a production company has bought the rights to the human-like dolls and will be creating an animated TV movie. Already we think this is a terrible, scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel sort of idea since most of the intended audience won’t even know what these dolls are. But as Jesus might have said, “Lord, if this bad movie has to happen, your will be done.” Here are a few general rules to keep the TV special from making us claw our eyes out.

1. Avoid any sort of live-action movie. Reports say that the movies will be animated, and all I can say is thank God. We do not need a repeat of this uncanny-valley level of horror:

2. Have CPK celebrities, like these Obama and Sarah Palin dolls! This might be a way to bridge the divide between those who remember the dolls themselves, and potential viewers who were born 5-10 years after the toys faded into obscurity.

3. No witty pop-culture references… One of my biggest pet peeves with animated series that are so precious with their “snappy” dialogue and just wind up making viewers cringe with how out-of-touch they actually are. If I hear a CPK call something “epic” or acknowledge “Friday,” I will pull out my gun.

4. …Except for acknowledging their popularity, that is. What I would be interested in seeing is a Toy Story bent, where the Cabbage Patch Kids deal with being yesterday’s entertainment, now gathering dust on a shelf. Another point of reference: The Muppets. They’re the masters of meta movies that aren’t grating.

5. Beanie Babies as the villains! It’ll be like Angry Birds, with ’80s toys battling their ’90s successors.
