Black Friday violence has become just as much of a holiday tradition as turkey on Thanksgiving. If you turned on the TV Friday morning and you saw the reports of guns, stampedes, and hair-pulling. This year we also saw a lot of pepper spray since that's the weapon of the moment. Even if you stayed home you might not have been safe from the madness of black Friday; you still probably caught a commercial playing "Friday," and now have the ear worm stuck in your head yet again. Here are some of the scariest scenes from yesterday's "competitive shopping." More »
Post from: Crushable

YourTango just reported that The New York Times discovered that most single women spend money on necessities, rather than on clothing, makeup, and everything Carrie Bradshaw. In other words, it’s a modern-day myth that single women spend like Carrie. YourTango reports, “In fact, single women spend less than 5 percent of their income on clothing, haircuts, manicures, and the like. According to the ‘Women at Work’ report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they spent the bulk of their funds on shelter. The second costliest expenditure is transportation, then food, utilities, healthcare, and entertainment. Apparel and services fall last on that list.”

What I want to know is, regardless if you’re single or taken, what do you do with your extra recreational money? This is money that’s left over from rent, car payments, basic food shopping, bills, etc. If I had to break it down, I probably spend it equally on good food and beauty treatments.

Thanksgiving is coming this Thursday. And you know what that makes the day after that: Black Friday. Black Friday is the annual party that takes place when countless retailers open their doors to crazed shoppers who will run around picking up whatever low priced products they can stick in their carts, put under their shirts or nab from passersby. Except it's less like a party and more like a nightmare.

All around the web I've been picking up tips on how to "deal with" Black Friday.

But the most important, best piece of advice is usually left out. And it's quite simple: Stay the fuck home. More »
Post from: Crushable

And you know what that makes the day after that: Black Friday. Black Friday is the annual party that takes place when countless retailers open their doors to crazed shoppers who will run around picking up whatever low priced products they can stick in their carts, put under their shirts or nab from passersby. Except it’s less like a party and more like a nightmare.

All around the web I’ve been picking up tips on how to “deal with” Black Friday.

But the most important, best piece of advice is usually left out. And it’s quite simple: Stay the fuck home.

You, like almost everyone else in America, will be on vacation this Friday. And though you may love crowds, tight spaces and angry ladies, there are better things to be done with your time off.

Do you have a computer? Great. Guess what? Most of those places you’re considering going to also have fancy websites. You know what else? They also have sales there.

To reiterate. This is what Black Friday looks like:

Chances are, you’re not going to make your best purchasing decisions while strong arming a 40-year old away from the sale rack at The Gap.

And yet, there is plenty of Black Friday available to help you do just that via Google: Use a buddy! Arrive early! Mapquest even has a “route planner” that helps you plot the most efficient route between up to 26 destinations.

According to MSNBC, there are actually people who go shopping on – and enjoy – Black Friday. From MSNBC:

“Strickland, 28, and her sisters and cousins will head out as early as midnight after Thanksgiving in search of deals she has been researching online and in print ads for more than a month.

‘It’s just something we look forward to each year,’ she said.”

Something I look forward to on Thanksgiving weekend each year is sitting around in comfortable pants and not yelling at strangers. I don’t know what your Thanksgiving is like, but I plan to consume much pie and tryptophan. You know what I don’t want to do the next day? Get up before 5A to shop.

Other things that adults should not have to do this weekend: bring a buddy, elbow people for toys, or stalk parking spots at malls.

And as just a subtle reminder: You are expected to pay for the pleasure of this event.

You know what is less terrible than that? Turning on your computer.

How about this one? Things sold on the internet are usually cheaper than things bought in stores. (Shhh. Don’t tell the olds!)

So if you really are bored and tired of sitting around your parents’ house this weekend (and hate yourself), venture out into stores.

If not, just go online. (And check back here on Friday, when we’ll have some great cheap shopping guides and ways to purchase things from the comfort of your laptop.)

And those products you know and love, from shampoo down to what flavor yogurt you prefer, are not always going to be available. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself enjoying and needing more and more products every day. Like my soap-free Aveeno face wash, Estee Lauder perfume and Burt’s Bees chapstick. And then there’s one thing I’ve haven’t gone a day without since high school: bronzer.

For the past few years, I’ve been obsessed with my Cargo bronzer, which a salesperson at Sephora turned me on to. It has just the right amount of shimmer and tint to make me look bronzed but not orange. But when I stopped in to a Sephora recently to restock my stash, I learned the line had been discontinued. “You can try searching online,” the less than helpful saleslady told me. “Most discontinued products end up there.”

If I had known my favorite bronzer was going the way of the Do-do bird I would have bought out the entire store months ago, Elaine Benes-style. But now it’s too late. I might be able to scrounge up a few more compacts of bronzer online but eventually it will be gone forever and I’ll have to find a new brand. I’m afraid its a routine I’ll have to go through a few more times, too.

So what do you do when one of your favorite products gets taken off the market? Seriously, I’m looking to you for advice. I’ve already started polling my friends for their bronzer recommendations, and I’m guessing I’ll have to try a few before finding a steady replacement. It’s a daunting task, but something I’ve resigned myself to. God forbid I go a day looking pale and sallow.

What are your techniques for finding new products to replace ones that leave the market? Do you have any good recommendations for a new bronzer?

Turns out there is something Orlando shares in common with other, non-elvish men: he hates watching his fiance shop for shoes!

According to Page Six, Miranda Kerr spent all Memorial Day dragging Orlando around so she could try on footwear, and he finally broke down in the cafe of Bergdorf Goodman. An eavesdropper overheard the fight where Orlando finally grew some balls and exclaimed, “Are you kidding me? You’ve been trying on hundreds of pairs of shoes!” before asking for his coffee to go. No one puts Legolas Greenleaf in the corner!
