Emily Browning’s New Movie Isn’t Your Mother’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’
With such a recognizable title that exactly mirrors the famous Disney movie, I assumed that Sleeping Beauty — starring Emily Browning, who replaced Mia Wasikowska — was a modern-day remake. But Julia Leigh‘s new indie more closely resembles the play and movie House of the Sleeping Beauties: Browning plays a student who turns to prostitution, going to live at a home where gentleman callers choose their favorite girls. But here’s the twist: Browning’s character takes a drug before she sleeps each night, so that men can do whatever they want with her, and when she wakes up she has no memory. More »
The MPAA Rates Movies More Harshly If Women Seem to Be Enjoying Sex
The MPAA’s relationship to sex in movies has always been problematic, but this new bit of information is still pretty shocking: Based on an anecdote that Emily Browning told Nylon magazine about a sex scene cut from Sucker Punch, it would appear that a movie in which the female character enjoys sex can’t get lower than an R rating. Girl Crushable: The Ladies of ‘Sucker Punch’
So, apparently I’m the only person on the Internet who actually liked Sucker Punch. (Jennifer at TheGloss hated how strangely personal the various tortures were.) Note that I did not love it: The messages about female empowerment and male possession were at times heavyhanded and incredibly confusing. But as I said to my friends when I left the screening, “I wish I had thought up this story.” To have time to play in the world that Zack Snyder — in his first wholly original work — created would have been a thrill.
But the video-game aesthetic of the worlds-within-worlds comes second in criticism to the hyper-sexualization of the five female leads. That was the part of Sucker Punch that made me uncomfortable, because it was often difficult to tell if this blend of sultry strip dancing (more on that in a minute) and ass-kicking were for the girls’ benefit, or for the men who were invariably watching. Ahh, we can’t wait for Sucker Punch! Director Zack Snyder has called his all-female lead flick “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.” Which sounds pretty awesome to us. The film stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone and even features Jon Hamm in a non-Draper role. We can’t believe we have to wait until March to see it. More »
What Is Lady Action Flick ‘Sucker Punch’?
The stars of director Zack Snyder’s upcoming fantasy action flick Sucker Punch — Vanessa Hudgens, Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino and Jamie Chung — made an appearance at Comic-Con this weekend and the movie’s trailer just debuted.
