At SXSW last week, 4chan founder Christopher Poole (known for a long time only by his screen name moot) criticized Mark Zuckerberg‘s vision for an online identity. Where the viewpoints of these two pivotal Internet players diverge is the dilemma of whether people should use their real name or a pseudonym on various websites. More »
What? No really, what? Some nutcase hanging around SXSW was spotted wearing this vegetable mass on his head — which is already weird — but add the two iPhones that stand in for his eyes and you’re at WTFF-level weirdness (an extra F always makes the point more dramatically). Alert your local cryptozoologist: America’s dumbest human has finally been tracked down. More »
SXSW drew to a close yesterday, and all that remains is a couple hundred BBQ stains on couple hundred plaid shirts. Did you miss the festival? We did too, but here’s a summary of what happened, based on a perusal of event photos: a lot of artists looked like they were eating their microphones. Is that a thing now? Check out our gallery of mics-as-meals. More »
Joe Nicolosi‘s reimagination of Super Mario Bros., in the form of a faux trailer that debuted at SXSW (via The Daily What), may be the best live-action take on Mario that I’ve seen, for the following reasons:
1. The gritty indie aesthetic.
2. Bowser as a yuppie who sneers, “Your princess? She’s in another castle.”
3. Mario’s sad face.
4. “You goomba!” “I don’t know where she is!”
5. Makeshift levels that incorporate mini golf castles, go karts, and what looks like a game of DDR. More »
Yesterday we posted about the dismal ratio of female performers taking the comedy stage at South by Southwest, and wrote up a list of funny ladies we’d love to see perform in Austin or anywhere else. Slate covered the story as well (linking to Crushable pal Lindsay Robertson, a funny woman in her own right who pointed out that the festival has one of those dreaded and recursive “Are women funny?” panels). Slate spoke to Charlie Sotelo, the festival’s comedy programmer, who said he was “heartbroken” over the reaction to his lineup and explained that scheduling conflicts kept him from booking more women. He claims the initial announcement is not a complete list and is currently trying to secure more female performers. More »
SXSW’s Greenberg For Chicks Gets Picked Up By IFC – Congratulations to Lena Dunham, director and star of South by Southwest’s winning feature Tiny Furniture. The movie just got picked up for distribution by IFC, and considering Dunham’s age (23), this may be the most exciting news for young women in film that we’ve heard all year. Oh also, Lena and I went to college together and she is amazing. (The Wrap)
Rohin Guha reports from the music scene at SXSW in Austin, Texas. In his latest music discovery, Rohin tracks down an interview with hip-hop artist/rapper K.Flay.
Before stepping out into the world as a forward-thinking rapstress, Illinois-raised K.Flay whiled the hours away in the Stanford libraries. Which explains well her effortless versatility demonstrated on MASHed Potatoes, a mixtape where she spits rhymes over everything from The Gossip to the Black Eyed Peas. K.Flay’s eclectic approach to hip-hop–one that finds muses in… More »
Rohin Guha reports from the music scene at SXSW in Austin, Texas. In his latest pop-music discovery, Rohin tracks down an interview with the mysterious and enchanting Elizabeth Harper, aka “Class Actress,” a singer we should get to know before she gets too famous and starts winning Grammys and stuff.
Born and raised in Southern California but currently residing in notorious New York hipster enclave Williamsburg, Class Actress, aka Elizabeth Harper, has managed to strike a neat, but intriguing balance among… More »
Casey LaBow, a.k.a. Ryan Gosling’s girlfriend, was spotted at the South By Southwest screening of Skateland. IMDb says she’s in the movie, so we guess that explains her presence. But it does not explain WHO EXACTLY SHE IS. We’re still wondering. Who are you, Casey LaBow? And why are you all up on our man?
Read our original post on Casey and Ryan for our first impressions of Ry’s new lady. (We can call him Ry because he is our future… More »
Well, we’ve been waiting for this one for a while (see Wizard Rockumentary for another sneak peek). There’s a bit of cussin’ in this middle of this trailer that honestly doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the vid at ALL, but whatever. Enjoy!
