I feigned absorption in my iPod, but he persisted. He nudged me with his elbow and repeated, “Sooo…you’re tall.” Blast. My iPod-induced cone of silence was broken. I sighed and turned to him for a chat I’d had many times before.

As a 6’4’’ girl (6’5’’ in shoes) I’m pretty used to these comments by now. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t get some sort of “tall comment.” I usually pick out a pre-recorded conversational tape from my mind and plug it in. Usually it’s the smiley-and-polite tape, or sometimes the one where I make people guess my height. Even more rarely there’s the one where I might fib a little and tell people I’m Rebecca Lobo from the WNBA … that’s a fun one. I’ve autographed a few T-shirts. Ms. Lobo, if you’re reading this, apologies, but I am increasing your fan base, I think. And then, of course, there’s the one I reserve for creepy men who have a tall-girl fetish … yeah. In their case, “Sooo … you’re tall!” is a knock-em-dead pick-up line. Catch me—I’m swooning!

Inevitably these fetish men pop up on the subway with frequency. And they seem to gain confidence only later at night—whether that is booze-induced is debatable. And while I appreciate the balls-to-the-wall attitude of these brave souls, I must say that following me home at 1 a.m. is not the way to win any girl’s affection. Is meeting someone on the subway an urban legend? Has anyone had success? It seems you are either going to be viewed as a freak, or you’re going to have to try your luck later on “Missed Connections”….(e.g. “You were mad tall. L train at 1am”).

But let’s move on to bars. I love when I walk into a bar and I can see clear across the place—whoops! Tallest person by a foot yet again! This happened to me in Ireland, with short Irish men shrieking the whole night, “Yuu! Yur tall! Ah loik tha’!” My personal favorite bar pick-up line was Stateside when a short black guy who sidled up to me, tapped me on the shoulder, and whispered into my ear, “I’m the only man in here who can handle you.” I burst out laughing and had to congratulate him on a job well done. There was actually some truth in what he’s said.

There’s a huge divide in terms of the men who are secure and confident enough to date a tall girl and those who aren’t. A man who thinks a tall girl shouldn’t wear heels because it makes him feel bad? Drop him! I once had a guy friend tell me that he would never even consider approaching a girl taller than him, because in his mind there’s no way she would be attracted to him. Gah! Wake up short men and grow a pair! While I have mostly dated men taller than me, I began opening my eyes to the shorty, and it unlocked a whole new world. For all of us out there who think we have a “type,” I urge you to reconsider and try something new. Many of my friends complain that they can’t find a decent man, when they aren’t giving enough guys a second look. Open up! Who knows where you’ll find that next love interest? On the subway? Ok, maybe not there….
