Growing up in Los Angeles, I always found winter holidays a little depressing. Something just doesn’t feel right when you’re wearing shorts to Christmas dinner or blasting the AC on Thanksgiving. But this year, the weather obliged the mood, and L.A. had an overcast TG — which allowed Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale and their kids to attire themselves in their handsomest fall clothing for an afternoon at Grandma’s. Check out these photos of Gwen, Gavin, Kingston and Zuma and prepare to totally swoon. More »
Black Friday 2011 was not the apocalypse I’d been expecting: No screaming soccer moms or death matches over the last HD TV. But bonding with my boyfriend’s family made it so much fun. Oh, and everything was super cheap. More »
For college students around the country, heading home for Thanksgiving means the best of times and the worst of times. Sure, you’ll snatch a few days off from classes, at least one warm home cooked meal. At the same time, it goes by way too quickly, you’re probably going to have to avoid your high school boyfriend and your parents are sure to question you all about classes. More »
Happy day-after Thanksgiving! What are you doing hunched over your computer? Taking a little break from family? Ah, we understand that and we’re here to help, with the cutest batch of photos you’re likely to see today. Babies dressed up as turkeys? Yes, please. Just don’t let Aunt Joanne hear you laughing or she’ll bust out the hip surgery conversation again. More »
If there’s one Thanksgiving tradition we look forward to every year it’s the presidential pardon of the hand turkey. Wherein our commander-in-chief looks over an array of festive drawings and selects one to take down from the Oval Office mini fridge, thereby saving its creator a season of embarrassment. Because hand turkeys are goofy, right? If you’re a grown-up human being and not a toddler, that is. So we decided to look outside the fist and found some creative interpretations of the illustrious hand turkey genre. More »
As part of her “pared-down” persona in A Very Gaga Thanksgiving, Lady Gaga performs “Marry the Night” for the very “intimate” audience of her family, friends, and millions of ABC viewers. (Wearing a princess tiara, of course.) More »
Yesterday Kim Kardashian made her first visit to a Los Angeles soup kitchen to feed the homeless. Was she seized by the Thanksgiving spirit, or is she trying to look like less of an image-obsessed brat? More »
It’s Thanksgiving day. I’m sixteen years old, the eldest of four children, orphaned as of the night before. Well, parentless. My folks won a five-day, all expense paid vacation for two that had to be used by December 1st. A free vacation is a free vacation, so off they went to the Bahamas, leaving me in charge of three loud kids ranging in age from six to 14. More »
Popcorn, toast, pretzels and jellybeans—thanks to Charlie Brown, these foods conjure up images of Thanksgiving Dinner for me almost as much as turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing do. While I usually watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and wonder, “Why do all these kids have nothing to do on Thanksgiving? Why is a dog given free reign to cook in a kitchen? What would the health department say about this?” this year I’m suspending disbelief and just feeling thankful for everything I’ve learned from this cool little cartoon.

Good morning! It’s you’re stomach’s favorite day of the year! (And your intestine’s least favorite.) Since today is all about eating (and, like family and thankfulness and all that stuff, I guess), what better way to kick things off that with a gallery of hot celebrity dudes with food in their mouths? No better way, we say. Happy chewing. More »

The rising cost of food means Thanksgiving will be more expensive this year. In fact, your holiday meal will run you about 13% more than last year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. That may not sound like much, but every dollar adds up (especially when the pressure to start shopping for Christmas begins the next day). Your turkey alone (for an average 16-pounder) will likely add an extra $4 to your feast. So how do you put on a delicious, festive meal for less? We have a few suggestions. More »

here’s nothing more exciting to children then Thanksgiving Day parades. Well, Christmas is probably better. And Halloween. And their birthdays. But other than those things, it’s 100 percent Thanksgiving floats! More »
Rivne is a small town in Ukraine with a population of less than 250,000. It’s an industrial city with war monuments scattered throughout its parks. In the winter, which was the season I experienced when I lived there for a month as a foreign exchange student during my freshman year of high school, it’s very cold and gray. In fact, it’s rather the opposite of Los Angeles, my hometown and the place our reciprocal group of Ukrainian students spent the Thanksgiving of 2000. More »
A big part of Orphan Week is the realization that you can’t take the time off to go home for the Thanksgiving holiday—whether you can’t afford to take time off from your new job, or “home” is just too far away to spend airfare on a four-day trip. (Or maybe you simply don’t want to interact with your old high-school friends!) But not to worry, because in missing out on past traditions, you carve out the space to create a new one: Friendsgiving. More »
Remember in kindergarten when you would trace your hand on a piece of construction paper and then turn it into a turkey? Reminiscing on that fun Thanksgiving tradition, we couldn’t help but imagine how various celebrities would decorate their hand-turkeys. More »
This Thanksgiving, I’ll give thanks for food, friends, and family (not necessarily in that order), but for the first time in my life, I won’t be spending the holiday passing the cranberry sauce to my mom or watching my dad awkwardly carve the turkey. Instead, I’ll be spending it more than a thousand miles away in my adopted home of Brooklyn, and I couldn’t be happier.
The truth is, while I’ll miss celebrating the holiday with my family, I’m looking forward to avoiding certain things. And no, I’m not referring to the judgment cast by my grandmother for biting my nails or for not sitting up straight, nor am I referring to the always-hellish experience of holiday airline travel. (Last year I was assigned a seat that had no cushion. Just a raw, curved piece of plastic. Good times.) No, I’m referring to the even more harrowing experience of running into people I knew in high school around my hometown when I least expect it. More »
Turkeys: delicious tasting, not attractive looking. In fact, among the ugliest creatures to walk the earth. Certainly not something that sounds like it would make a good tattoo, right? Wrong!
