Alec Baldwin, of the can-do-anything Baldwins, seems like a shoo-in for mayor of New York. After all, he’s got everything required of a New York mayor: he’s rich and famous, he heads a multinational corporation, and he’s already an iconic part of the New York City zeitgeist. Yes, I am conflating him with Jack Donaghy. What of it? He might even be able to trick some Republicans into voting for him because they can’t tell the difference between reality and TV, either.

Unfortunately, it seems like we’re going to have to wait a while for Baldwin to replace mayor-for-life Mike Bloomberg. When asked about his ambitions on Letterman last night, Baldwin dodged the question nicely, saying he would like to be mayor, but he would not like to have to do the things one must do in order to become mayor. Perhaps he hopes to attain the office via spontaneous military coup? Or maybe King Bloomberg will appoint him his successor? Anyway, it’s all pretty abstract, because at this point, he’d rather be spending time with his hot, 27-year-old yoga instructor girlfriend:

Would I rather be handcuffed to the emergency command center in Maspeth during a hurricane, holding down the fort and making sure all the plows are working… or would I rather spend some of that ’30 Rock’ money traveling the world with my girlfriend?

Hurricanes don’t require plows, honey. But fair point otherwise.

Still, he has yet to rule it out completely. “Baldwin for mayor in 2014″ has a nice, futuristic ring to it. Sigh.

Right now, I am reporting to you from Charleston, SC. Today being my younger brother Joe‘s 18th birthday, I was flown home to celebrate his big day in southern style. Last night we had family dinner at one of three local hibachi restaurants – unfortunately when we arrived, they told us that they don’t cook it in front of you anymore. We asked the waitress if she would mind still tossing us the shrimp but she didn’t think it was as funny as we did. After he gets out of school, Joe and his friends and I will go with him to do all the fun exciting stuff that he hasn’t gotten to do before: buy a lottery ticket, a pack of cigarettes, and an adult magazine. A smoke shop downtown even gives out a free cigar to someone on their birthday! Tonight the boys might go to a strip club, but with the whole brother-sister thing I might sit that one out.

Upon coming home after being in the city for four consecutive months, there are so many things I noticed right away – but the number one difference was attitude. From the moment you step off the plane you notice a generally more calm atmosphere. The plane ride is short and comfortable and the plane itself is so tiny that there are maybe 18 rows and no room for separate classes. Everyone is looking forward to their own holiday from realty in a place where the people talk slower and actually stop to listen to a homeless person’s story as to why they need money.

As far as my brother’s birthday goes, I couldn’t think of a better way for someone to celebrate an 18th birthday. In NYC, most of the kids turning 18 already have fake ID’s, so their birthday celebration is more discotheque oriented to say the least. Down here, we’d rather drive an hour out to someone’s country house, drink cold Bud Light and let music play loudly from whomever’s truck has the best sound system. Some call it primitive, we call it comfort.

26-year-old Kristina Wegscheider is an avid traveler and the founder of travel website for young women, Do It While You’re Young, which strives to break down the barrier stopping most young women from traveling abroad. She spoke to Crushable about her own experiences — having traveled to nearly 50 countries and trying to blend in as a 6-foot tall blonde — and gave us some ideas for tips and tricks to use along the way.

Do your research
Kristina advises doing searches of sites like the State Department’s website before digging into travel sites, to find out what kind of visa requirements are necessary to get into the country. Then check out sites like Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor or pick up a local guide book to see what neighborhoods are the safest for you to stay. “You can usually find three or four neighborhoods that are a little safer, a little more residential maybe,” she said. “And I typically try to find a hotel in those areas, just so I can walk down the street.”

Arrange for transportation from the airport when you get there
“After a 20- or 30-hour flight I’m not on my guard all the time and it’s nice to have a car or something arranged just so I’m not struggling with taxis,” Kristina said.

Keep your passport on you at all times
“My goal is to keep my passport separate from my purse so that if I did get robbed I could give my purse up and I would still have my passport,” Kristina said. She always carries a messenger bag purse and a little across the body bag she can tuck away discreetly to hold her passport and some money.

Bring cash
Kristina advises changing your money before you leave, and don’t bother with traveler cheques or credit cards. “I’ve had bad luck with credit cards,” she admits. Another tip: put some small bills and coins in an outside pocket of your purse for tips or small purchases, so you won’t have to drag out your big wallet.

Research local customs and dress conservatively
It’s all about blending in. “I live in California so I’m used to wearing shorts and tank tops all summer, so I have to adjust myself a little bit,” Kristina said. “I just went to Jordan, and you have to change your mindset when it’s hot outside but people aren’t wearing shorts. You have to adapt to the local culture.”

Lose the jewelry
Try to accessorize with things like scarves, because you don’t want to draw the wrong kinds of attention for wearing flashy jewelry, even if it’s plastic.

Arrange taxis through your hotel
You’ll usually get a better deal and a higher standard of taxi if you go through your hotel. And don’t forget to always negotiate the rate beforehand.

When in doubt, take a tour
“If I am going to somewhere that is a little bit off the beaten path, I tend to do a small group adventure tour, where I’ll go by myself but I’ll join a tour of maybe 10-12 people,” she said. “A lot of people have the idea that a tour is going to be 50 people piling off the bus at the major sights, but I’ve been able to find some tour companies that are more kind of an in between. They provide some structure, but you still have a lot of free time. That’s been a really good mix for me, as far as going to somewhere that’s not as touristy.” She recommends Gap Adventures, Peregrine Adventures, Gecko’s Adventures and Contiki Tours.

Just make smart decisions
Stick to the basics: don’t travel alone if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t go out in a place that gives you a bad feeling, watch your alcohol intake and stay hydrated. Another good tip from Kristina: if you feel uncomfortable, create a fake boyfriend or husband who is “meeting you” somewhere on your trip. Sometimes Kristina even wears a fake ring.

While Lindsay did get to leave in a private plane, she had trouble when she tried to connect with a flight back in the states.

Lindsay posted to Twitter about how she, her sister Ali and the family friend they were with didn’t have very good luck with US Airways.

“Us Airways – don’t fly them,” Lindsay Tweeted Tuesday.

In fact, the trio seemed to have problems from the get-go.

“Still driving …… I got stuck in St Barths because of no available outgoing flights! Then when we were at our connection flight back 2 NY”

“So then, airline “SAYS” the flight was delayed, and IT WASN’T-so we of course, what happens next? We miss the flight last night-LAST 1!!!!

When they land in North Carolina, they decide to drive the rest of the way.

“What happens next….? Me, my sis&fam friend refuse2stay in Charlotte, North Carolina&rent a car!”

But at least she’s enjoying the scenery….

So, now we’ve been driving for hourssss back home-Road Trip styles! I just woke up to snow! Beaches&waves to SNOW&30degrees. happyNewYear!!

Oh… May Hertz Rentals have a wonderful year, just for our services home! Lol* and dunkin donuts for coffee keeping our friend awake2drive!

Oh and sirius radio has MAJORLY helped…… Not enough sleep yet-delirious, yes I am….. Night night all :) lol wow been a long one!*
