Skip The New Rebecca Black Video ‘Person Of Interest’ And Watch This Victorious One Instead

Did anyone know that Rebecca Black even had a new video out? Nope? OK, good. It says a lot that her third single lacks the explosive nature of “Friday” or the wild anticipation of “My Moment.” While “Person of Interest” is her second-best offering, it still falls way short of the utter ridiculousness we associate with her. I fear that we will never reclaim the magic of “Friday.”

Sorry Rebecca, but despite a clever play on words in the title, the video is just plain boring. I don’t even know why there are cops. Plus, she just seems less enthusiastic; sure, she’s at a glittering carnival, but she seems less excited than when she had to go meet her friends at the bus stop.

Instead, I recommend you check out Victoria Justice‘s video for “Beggin’ On Your Knees,” released this past spring. I first got to watch it when I interviewed the Victorious cast; even with no knowledge of the show, I was compelled to write about what a fun music video it was.

Part of the reason is that it has actual conflict: Like in “Person of Interest,” Tori hangs out with a cute guy at the carnival. But then she discovers that he’s got another girl on the side, so she conspires to reveal him to be a jerk. Sure, it’s kind of a juvenile plotline, but it’s more interesting than Rebecca’s convoluted story—she met a Justin Bieber lookalike, he won her a teddy bear, and then…? I still can’t figure out if a crime were actually committed.

Also, Rebecca’s out-of-sync dancing doesn’t match up to Tori’s moves on the skeeball machine.

RIP Steve Jobs. He was truly a visionary, and he forever changed our understandings of technology. So much of his innovative work is forever embedded in pop culture—in fact, most people heard of his death after a long battle with pancreatic cancer over one of his inventions.

His impact was so universal that a bevy of celebrities commented on his passing over Twitter. (Not to be outdone, Steve’s fellow tech executives had much to say in memory of him as well.)

Interview: Nickelodeon Star Liz Gillies on the ‘iParty with Victorious’ Crossover

This weekend, Nickelodeon unites its two major shows, iCarly and Victorious, in a 90-minute TV special called iParty with Victorious. In the crossover, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) and Tori (Victoria Justice) discover that they’re dating the same guy; when Carly and her pals head down to L.A. to catch the cheating boyfriend in the act, the Hollywood Arts kids get to meet the stars of their favorite webshow. Oh, and Nick alum Kenan Thompson shows up playing himself.

Earlier this week, we chatted with Victorious star Liz Gillies, who plays mean girl Jade, about getting to know the iCarly cast better and whether the 17-year-old will get to attend a non-TV prom.

How was shooting iParty?

Gillies: It was a lot of fun. It was crazy to work with iCarly and have all those crazy energies and personalities in one room together. ‘Cause our characters are crazy, but we’re all crazy, too. It was wild, throwing this all together. There was never a dull moment. The movie was lots of fun; I spent a lot of time in the hot tub, which was fun. We do a really great singing scene. It was a blast.

Did both casts record the theme song mash-up, “Leave It All to Shine,” in the studio on the same day?

Gillies: I came in with a couple of my cast members, and iCarly [came in another day]; we recorded separately. We ran into each other a little bit. It was so much fun. It was difficult, ‘cause they’re such differnet songs! The fact that they mashed them up together well was cool. It was fun recording and fun performing it.

Do you have any favorite mash-ups?

Gillies: Yeah, it’s “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” but with a rap… My brother has this online DJ thing where you can spin songs together. Ari[ana Grande] actually just did a really cool mash-up—she did “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself.” It was smart of her.

Do you guys have your own YouTube accounts?

Gillies: I just opened mine; it’s LizGilliesOfficial. You know it’s real ‘cause it says “official”—none of the others can do that! (laughs) I have about six videos up right now. The funny thing with my videos is, I have a couple full songs I recorded in a studio, but when it comes to my singing, I feel like nobody wants to watch me sing for four minutes at a time; I think that’s boring. I make these weird little snippet videos. But I have a lot of fun covering little things; I play piano a little bit, so dabbling in that. It’s gotten some good feedback so far.

Prom Flick Check List: ‘Victorious’

We’re nearing the end of prom season, but there’s at least one more TV show that took a stab at the most revered of high school events: Nickelodeon’s Victorious had an episode last weekend called “Prom Wrecker,” in which Tori’s (Victoria Justice) big dance threatened to upstage Jade’s (Liz Gillies) one-woman show. Let’s see if the whole episode made the grade.

Victorious‘ Prom List Rating: 45

The Art of Asking: 4/10

I expected the kids to plan elaborate song-and-dance numbers to ask each other to prom, but all we got was Trina coercing Sinjin into helping her win prom queen in exchange for her as a date, and Robbie asking Cat. Strangely, in the latter scene both characters were holding dolls (him a ventriloquist, her a giraffe) yet they didn’t ask each other through those toys. Kat turns him down because another guy already asked her, and though her details about her date sound like elaborate lies — his light-up hat and singed tuxedo — it turns out she was being honest. So, maybe there’s still hope for Robbie/Cat.

Tori, meanwhile, completely forgets.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight: 2/10

The only character wrestling with relationship woes is André, who can’t pry his girlfriend off him long enough to actually get to know her. But by the end of the episode, she still doesn’t know that he’s uncomfortable making out with her in the hallway. And despite being the star of the show, Tori doesn’t seem to currently have any romantic entanglements.

Montages and Choreographed Dance Sequences: 3/10

Since each of the girls ended up in cute dresses, I would’ve liked to see a classic fitting-room sequence, but no dice. Still, I’ll toss in a few points for Doug the Diaper Guy’s dance.

Dress Drama: 3/10

The one thing I expected Jade to sabotage was Tori’s dress, but Ms. Vega seemed to make it to the dance in one piece, with a Marilyn Monroe-esque hot pink dress and long black gloves. For all her bitching, Jade looked good in a teal tulle number, and Cat’s pale dress was nicely understated.

Resemblance to Our Proms: 8/10

To be fair, my junior prom was on a boat, so we shared the outdoor location with Victorious. However, we didn’t have rain, while these guys decide to just keep singing and dancing in the downpour. But for a prom that’s cobbled together in just a few days, the decorations and set-up is all very believable.

7 Notable TV Crossovers

When we interviewed Liz Gillies at the Victorious press junket, she mentioned that her show would be doing a crossover with Nickelodeon’s other big earner, iCarly, called iParty with Victorious: “It’s wild and fun, and there’s a really cool guest star.” With the special airing on June 11, Nick just released a behind-the-scenes video of stars Miranda Cosgrove and Victoria Justice, plus their respective casts, performing a mash-up of their theme songs. Yep, they take the idea of a TV crossover very seriously. Oh, and Kenan Thompson is gonna be on it.

The TV crossover is a tried-and-true way for networks to amp up viewership and get fans of one show interested in a similar one. It could be by fabricating situations (some more convincing than others) on scripted shows, or bringing in beloved actors onto one of the network’s competition shows. Plus, if you’re a fan of both parties, there’s a kind of novelty to seeing your favorite characters/actors interact with one another. Read on for examples from ABC, NBC, Nickelodeon, and The CW.

Spoiler: Details from Victoria Justice’s “Beggin’ On Your Knees” Music Video

We got the chance to see a rough cut of the new Victorious music video for “Beggin’ On Your Knees” today, and it looks really fun. Victoria Justice, Avan Jogia, Daniella Monet, Elizabeth Gillies, and the rest of the cast run around at a carnival, but also get into a little mischief — set to a surprisingly catchy song. You’ll get your chance to see the whole thing when it premieres tomorrow night at 9:45 p.m. on Nickelodeon, but a video snippet went up on E! Online yesterday.

Most of the action takes place at a carnival, much like the Degrassi season 10 promo that came out last summer. But whereas in “Shark in the Water” the kids from Degrassi High play circus performers and other behind-the-scenes characters — fire breathers, fortune tellers, kissing booth attendants — Tori Vega is enjoying the carnival with her friends, and the boy she likes. Unfortunately, he’s got his eye on another girl, taking her to all of the same spots he went to with Tori. (The part with them on the beach looks straight out of “Sandcastles in the Sand,” for any How I Met Your Mother fans.)

On Saturday, April 2, Justice will perform “Beggin’ On Your Knees” on Countdown to Kids’ Choice, a one-hour special prior to the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards hosted by Jack Black. Right after the show at 9:30 p.m. will be a new episode of Victorious, with the same title as the song, where Tori gets teamed up with the hottest guy in school to perform at the Full Moon Jam but is worried about his intentions. So, the video matches up pretty nicely in terms of theme.

You can buy the “Beggin’ On Your Knees” single from the iTunes store on Tuesday, April 5. Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow night for the world premiere of the music video!
