So You Think You Can Dance 6: Two Tappers Tossed Out

This week, I am burning mad at my TiVo! It messed up and didn’t record So You Think You Can Dance for me. That wouldn’t be so bad if it were only a show that gets played on the web so I could watch it later. But for some insane reason, FOX does not put SYTYCD on the web after it airs. And none of the episodes are ever re-run, so I’ll never get to watch the dance performances from this week. I hate that!!!

Ok, I am done venting… Sadly, two of the tap dancers went home this week. Both Bianca and Phillip were eliminated on this week’s episode. I’m sad to see them both go because they were both so positive and joyful about dancing. It was just fun to watch them.

So You Think You Can Dance 6: Meet Your Top 20 Dancers

Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, we got to see all of the Top 20 Dancers perform in their own style. We also got to see an incredible Wade Robson choreographed group dance that was insanely good!

Since they wanted to give each dancer a chance to perform without fear at least once, they did not do any eliminations. But on tonight’s show, one couple will go home based on their couple dances tonight.

So You Think You Can Dance Choreography: Wade & Amanda Robson

One of my absolute favorite choreographers for So You Think You Can Dance is Wade Robson. He has created some of the most memorable dance routines on the series. You remember the Zombie Dance from season 2, don’t you? He’s amazing.

In this clip, we get to hear from him and his wife Amanda about how they work together to create a group dance routine for the show. It’s a collaboration between the amazing dance moves, the key concepts of the piece, the costumes, the lighting and the music. They do a great job of explaining the process to us for creating last week’s Asian-inspired group dance performance:

So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 12 Performed

This week on So You think You Can Dance, the top 12 dancers this season performed and after two are eliminated, the top 10 will be revealed. That means that those are the dancers going on the tour after the season ends.

The guest judge this week was Tyce Diorio and even though he is totally confident as a choreographer, he still seems a bit timid in the judging department. But he knows his stuff and give him another time to judge and I’m sure he’ll have it down.

This was my absolute favorite performance of the night! And not surprisingly, one of my favorite choreographers, Wade Robson choreographed the peice. (I’m sooooo glad he’s back this season!) Brandon Bryant and Janette Manrara danced this one perfectly too. It’s a jazz routine with some humor thrown in. I loved it!

Evan Kasprzak & Randi Evans did a great job performing a samba routine choreographed by SYTYCD vetrans Anya Garnis & Pasha Kovalev.

This was a fun routine where Jeanine Mason & Phillip Chbeeb performed a jive routine choreographed by Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin.

Caitlin Kinney & Jason Glover performed a Lyrical Jazz routine choreographed by Mandy Moore. I thought it was good, but not great.

Kupono Aweau & Kayla Radomski performed a very cool Broadway routine choreographed by Joey Dowling. Kupono has really come a long way this season!!

I have become such a fan of Melissa Sandvig & Ade Obayomi this season. They proved why when they took on a Waltz choreographed by Ron Montez. Fabulous!

This routine was hot, hot, HOT!! It was Brandon Bryant & Janette Manrara performing an Argentine Tango choreographed by Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo.

Evan Kasprzak & Randi Evans did a really good job with a Hip Hop routine choreographed by Napolean & Tabitha D’Umo.

this was the first time this dance style has ever been performed on the show and from Nigel Lythgoe’s reaction, it will probably be the last. Here, Jeanine Mason & Phillip Chbeeb did a good job with it, but it wasn’t very technical or interesting to watch. It was a Russian Folk routine choreographed by Youri Nelzine.

Caitlin Kinney & Jason Glover were elegant with their performance of a Foxtrot choreographed by Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin.

Kupono Aweau & Kayla Radomski were amazing with this emotional performance of a Contemporary routine choreographed by Mia Michaels.

This was such a fun routine! It took me back to the days of disco and made me want to shake my groove thing! Here, Melissa Sandvig & Ade Obayomi performed a Disco routine choreographed by Doriana Sanchez.

Wade Robson, Cirque du Soleil & Criss Angel

What do all three of these have in common? The new Criss Angel Believe show in Las Vegas at the Luxor. I was there and was lucky to get to watch from the front row recently and here’s my review.

First of all ladies, it wasn’t hard to watch Criss Angel from just a few feet away when he had his shirt off.

He’s always a fabulous illusionist so the show gives him a way to showcase some of his more spectacular illusions. But it’s not all Criss and his magic, even though that by itself would be a wonderful show.

It also brings in the most incredible Cirque du Soleil performers and they do their amazing acrobatics in mid-air, as well as all over the stage between dances and illusions. The costumes are just as incredible as any other Cirque show, so you know it will be dazzling to watch.

But then there’s the third aspect of Believe that I think you dance fans will be as interested, if not more interested in hearing about. It’s the fact that the dance routines have been choreographed by one of my personal favorite chorographers, Wade Robson. And yes, the dance totally lived up to my expectations of Wade Robson work. Spectacular!!

If you watched last season of So You Think You Can Dance, there was a performance one of the dance numbers from Believe. The piece is entitled Homage to the Rabbits. Here’s the version that aired on the show:

Now you can tell that I watched that dance routine over and over with my TiVo dozens of times even before I knew I would be going to Las Vegas. The way you can tell that is that I recognized slight differences in the version that they performed live. For example, the rabbit-sized coffin with the rabbit ears was not in the live show. It was a supposedly dead rabbit instead. There were other slight differences, but just like this one, none of them detracted from my enjoyment even a tiny bit.

This show is different from other Cirque shows, for example “O” which I saw the very next night from the second row, in that it had a specific star and incorporated the dance numbers and the cirque elements as clever ways to transition from one of Criss’s illusions to the next. It all flowed seamlessly and the time flew by so fast I wanted to stay in the seat and see it all again!

The main reason I wanted in the front row was to see if I could spot any wires, etc. that were there to help Criss levitate, or other tell-tale clues to how things were done. Even when he levitated from the back of a curtain and walked down the front, there were no wires to be seen. I absolutely could not see how he did it! He’s amazing!

So if you will be in Las Vegas any time in the next 10 years (that’s how long he’s under contract for the show there) be sure to go to the Luxor and see Criss Angel Believe. It’s a show for everyone. And don’t be late for the show…in fact, you should be early. Like all Cirque du Soleil shows, the show begins before the show begins. Cirque performers come into the crowd and do comedy bits while the audience is being seated. The earlier you get there, the more show you get to enjoy. This one is a definite winner in my book!

So You Think You Can Dance Australia 2009 Sneak Peek

And can you believe that last season, Twitch & Hok were up against each other for the final slot in the top 20 and Twitch didn’t make it? I love Hok, but I’m so glad that Twitch made it this season. He’s wonderful.
8:50 PM And this season, it was down to Katee and her roommate for the final girls’ spot. They almost didn’t choose her. Thank goodness, they did!
8:51 PM Can you believe the impact that hip-hop dancers have had this season? And most of them with absolutely no classical training at all. It’s amazing!

10:35 PM Jive is a dance style in 4/4 time that originated among African-Americans in the early 1940s. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance. In Ballroom dancing, Jive is one of the five International Latin dances. In competition it is danced at a speed of 44 bars per minute, although in other cases this is reduced to between 32 and 40 bars per minute.

So You think You Can Dance 4: More Preview Photos!!

I am totally getting psyched about the upcoming new season of So You Think You Can Dance. Of all the summer series, it’s absolutely my favorite one. And FOX must be getting excited too, because they’ve just released some more photos of the auditions for us. (I wonder if that tool that calls himself “Sex” will show up again this year…)

I do have some real horrible news for Shane Sparks and Wade Robson fans, though. Neither one will be back as choreographers and judges this season. Shane had to sign an exclusivity contract when he joined the judge team for America’s Best Dance Crew. And Wade has been doing many other projects and won’t be able to do it this year either. But the show always has amazing shoreography and judges, so I kow it will be great again this year anyway.

Wade Robson Will Choreograph Ballet

Fans of So You think you Can Dance have seen the fabulous choreographer, Wade Robson work his magic with the dancers on the show and now the fans of ballet can experience the Wade magic too.

He has just been commissioned to choreograph his first ballet piece for the San Francisco Ballet’s 75th Anniversary Diamond Gala Celebration. All I can say is, I wish I could be there to see it performed. Wade’s dances always dazzle and amaze me.

Wade won an Emmy award for his work on So You Think you Can Dance and performed with Michael Jackson at the age of 10, choreographed and directed Britney Spears’ videos and tours, writes & produces songs, directs videos and will now choreograph the season premiere performance of the San Francisco Ballet. And can you believe that he’s only 25 years old? Most choreographers have a fraction of those credits to brag about after a long career. We have so many more great things to see from Wade Robson, and this should be no exception to his reputation of excellence.
