Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh was found dead in a Chicago hotel room on Sunday. No official cause of death has been given, but the police suspect drugs may have been involved. Mikey, 40, was in town to see Weezer play a show at RiotFest.

iCarly star/singer Miranda Cosgrove and her Dancing Crazy Tour members had a scare this morning, when their bus crashed into an overturned tractor-trailer on the road in Illinois. Fortunately, no one was killed, though Miranda broke her ankle and has to postpone the rest of her tour. But they got off easy compared to the plenty of celebrity tour buses have gotten into grislier accidents, often claiming the lives of innocent bystanders. More »
If you weren’t sure whether Weezer had gone completely downhill since Pinkerton, wonder no more: frontman Rivers Cuomo produced and sang backup on a Miranda Cosgrove single. The song, “High Maintenance,” is from her new album of the same name. More »
Vulture has a good write-up of the new Weezer song, which is actually an ad for State Farm Insurance. Basically, as a former Weezer superfan, I’m like “Yeah! This is some good, classic Weezer! Yeah, I’m gonna put this on my iPod and listen to it three times a day. Oh, wait? It’s selling me car insurance? Figures.” More »
Rivers Cuomo does his best Beach Boys in front of a piano, and in return, we do our best us: swooning over Rivers Cuomo in front of a computer. Watching this kind of makes us feel like we’re going through puberty all over again, except this time we’re actually old enough to act on all those Rivers fantasies. More »
Weezer releases a couple rare songs, fans geek out – Rivers Cuomo posted two rarities to his website: and outtake from Pinkerton and something called “Blowin My Stack” (ew?). More old Weezer, please! (Vulture)
Man wants to pay Weezer $10 million to break up – Some dude is really mad at Rivers Cuomo. James Burns started an online fundraiser to try and persuade the band to call it quits. So far? He’s raised 12 bucks. (PopEater)
Maybe you missed it yesterday (too busy eating all the ice-cream in the world for that made up holiday, National Singles Week, were we?), but Lost‘s Jorge Garcia — the titular Hurley of the upcoming Weezer album — joined Rivers Cuomo and the rest of the band on-stage to perform “Perfect Situation.” Jeez, and he’s a good singer to boot! Welcome to Crush This, your weekly guide to what’s new in movies, music and TV. We’ve navigated the inner reaches of our entertainment-obsessed brains in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. We’re finally over our Labor Day hangover, and settling into this crazy new season called fall. The best thing about fall? New seasons of our favorite television shows premiere, along with new shows altogether, like Top Chef: Just Desserts and Boardwalk Empire. More »
When it was announced that Weezer’s new album was going to be named Hurley, and would feature a picture of Lost‘s Jorge Garcia on the cover, people flipped out. Because if there’s one thing America can get together on, it’s shows about smoke monsters and guys who stay unreasonably overweight on a desert island for six years. Just sayin’!
And while Weezer has been unusually quiet about their reasons for such a move, we decided that as much as we love Hurley, there were several other characters of our favorite TV shows that were equally deserving of their own cover art. Check it out.
But there are just so many other good ones! More »
Screw that 12-minute epilogue. Rivers Cuomo knows how to answer six seasons worth of burning questions about a magic island: With an album titled Hurley that includes a giant portrait of Gorge Garcia. Or it could just be one giant in-joke that we’re not getting. Then again…that’s sort of how we felt about Lost too, so Hurley it is!… More »
Which Musical Collaborations Are You More Excited About? – Bjork teaming up with The Dirty Projectors for a split EP, or Weezer giving Ryan Adams the guitar and a song-writing credit on their newest album? Think carefully, this decision is what every hipster will judge you on for the next two months, at least. (via The Frisky)
