Mariah Carey Named Brand Ambassador For Jenny (Craig)

Since giving birth to her twins Moroccan (sigh) and Monroe earlier this year, Mariah Carey has lost what appears to be a monumental amount of weight. A little research reveals the exact public figure to be 70 lbs, or approximately one Justin Bieber. Apparently, much of this weight loss was affected via the “Jenny” (they’ve dropped the “Craig”) diet program, so it comes as no surprise that the company would want the famously shapely pop star to be their newest brand ambassador.

“I feel better in every way,” the 42-year-old singer told USA Today. “To me, it’s mind, body and soul. I was in a bad place physically during my pregnancy.” For Carey, that “bad place” included gestational diabetes and severe edema (swelling), which does sound pretty damn awful.

In addition to getting paid a ton of money to lend her face and music to their commercials, Carey will also get paid a ton of money to help “support” the American Heart Association’s new initiative, “My Heart. My Life.” I’m glad that “Jenny” is putting some of their massive fortune behind a public health initiative, but I hope they emphasize healthy living over weight loss, because those two things don’t necessarily go hand in hand. But as the whole point of a diet program is “weight loss as marker of success,” something tells me I shouldn’t hold my breath.

‘Jersey Shore’s’ JWOWW Is Looking A Bit Different These Days

When The Jersey Shore premiered its fourth(!!) season last week, many fans were struck by the altered appearance of longtime cast member JWOWW. Her body looked substantially skinnier than her already-toned physique had in past seasons, and her face looked like it had been injected with all manner of things. Unkind tweets abounded. “#Jwoww looks like the Joker on crack,” tweeted one fan. “She looks down about 30 lbs and sick,” tweeted another. Ouch.

JWOWW, as usual, didn’t give a hoot, tweeting, “Flattered I’m the topic of tabloids.Funny what people assume when u lose weight and tone. Loving the stories…” I wonder what exercises she did to tone her face like that?

The veracity of her claims aside, why do people suddenly care so much about JWOWW’s appearance? It’s not like she was Miss Inner Beauty before; she readily admitted to having breast implants. I have a few theories:

1.) Fans look to The Jersey Shore for some kind of guido/guidette authenticity (I know, I know). Part of what makes the show’s characters great in their eyes is that the beauty ideal they strive for (tan, athletic but curvy, brunette, Italian, gaudy) is so different from that which is endorsed by Hollywood. Breast implants fit into the guidette beauty ideal, while excessive skinniness and unnatural-looking facial surgery do not. Hence, they’re mad she deviated from the Shore‘s original house style to something more “Hollywood.” Way to keep it real, JWOWW!

2.) They’re concerned that fame has damaged JWOWW’s mental health to the point where she’s addicted to dieting and plastic surgery. These people draw a distinction between “good” plastic surgery and plastic surgery that goes too far. A single, semi-realistic boob job? Okay, you are maybe not crazy and just wanted bigger boobs. A long string of ever more noticeable surgeries on every part of your body? Your soul is as empty as Heidi Montag’s.

3.) They just think it looks bad and are being jerks about it. (I sort of agree with these people…obviously, JWOWW can do whatever she wants with her body, but I think she’s abandoning a face that was very pretty to begin with for a creepy plastic surgery face.) The general consensus seems to be that it’s okay to treat reality stars this way, because they get to be rich and famous for basically no reason, and we must create some sort of downside to this for them. You know, for balance.

4.) They are all just fat and jealous. Hi, haters. How is it down there in Loserville?

‘Dancing with the Stars’: Kirstie Alley Does the Cha Cha

My early prediction for this season of Dancing with the Stars: Kirstie Alley is a contender. It’s not because she’s a great dancer (she’s surprisingly okay), but because she a) has good name recognition and b) has relatability. Those factors matter as much as – and maybe more than – dancing ability on this show. One of Dancing‘s favorite tropes is the contestant who came on the show to lose weight and get in shape, and it has helped everyone from Jerry Springer to Kelly Osbourne get further than they expected on the show. That has a lot to do with the fact that Dancing‘s average viewer is a middle-aged woman, and those viewers like being able to relate to a contestant’s story. (That’s one reason why supermodels like Paulina Porizkova and Josie Maran, as well as reality starlets/pinups like Holly Madison and Kim Kardashian never fare well on this show, their mediocre dancing nonwithstanding). Unlike American Idol, Dancing with the Stars is a place that rewards older contestants for their hard work. Donny Osmond was 51 when he won his season, and Florence Henderson was an audience favorite, even though her dancing skills were lacking.

Kirstie seems to know this, and she’s playing it up beautifully. “I think if I was 22 and a size 2, this would be easier,” she said while struggling with a dance move. “If someone told me to haul ass, it would take two trips.” Partnered with mega-hottie Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who has quite a following of his own, she has a tremendous amount of potential. Kirstie has made a cottage industry out of her weight struggles, profiting off everything from a Jenny Craig endorsement, a bikini-wearing appearance on Oprah, and a TV show called Fat Actress. She knows how to turn her weight struggles into tabloid headlines, and if she plays her cards right she could also turn them into reality TV victory.

And it seems like Dancing knows her potential, too. Pairing with her Maks was a calculated move – they know he has a big fanbase who will vote for him no matter who his partner is, and he’s known for saying controversial things in the press that bring more attention to the show. The first episode’s music was also a clue: celebrities whom the show favors get more recognizable pop songs. Kirstie and Maks’ cha cha song was Cee-Lo Green‘s “Forget You.” Having the audience already singing along is a great way to lure them into liking a performance. As for the actual content of the dance? She was okay, but there’s potential. And one of the best ways to win this show is to start off in the middle of the pack and have an improvement/redemption arc. Kirstie’s definitely the one to watch this season.

Poll: Would You Take The New Weight-Loss Drug Contrave?

So an FDA panel has just voted to approve the use of a pill called Contrave to battle clinical obesity. And unlike some other forms of diet pills, Contrave doesn’t contain any amphetamines (speed) or caffeine whatsoever. Well, what kind of fun is that?

Instead, Contrave is made up of bupropion (Wellbutrin) and naltrexone, which is used to treat addiction and alcoholism. So basically, an anti-depressant and something to keep you from drinking too much. It sounds like, to quote Trent Reznor, the perfect drug.

But there’s no such thing as a miracle cure-all, especially when it comes to weight issues. The test studies have shown that there was only a .8 percent weight loss in patients’ taking the drug versus that taking the placebo, and there are concerns about high blood pressure and possible heart-attack risks. Which, ironically, are also symptoms of extreme obesity.

Our generation has been taught that taking diet pills is very, very bad, but if there was a healthy alternative (besides exercising, god forbid) would you take it?

Between The Lines: Most Annoying Things Celebrities Do In The Media

Each week in Between the Lines, we shed some insidery light on the weird world of celebrities — specifically, how they’re covered in the media. This includes downward spirals (what up, Lindsay?), paparazzi tip-offs (that means you, Angelina) and those wrongfully accused of ruining American Idol (once again, Seacrest is not responsible). You know what though? None of the above is nearly as annoying as Stephanie Pratt, whose sole purpose in life seems to copy Lauren Conrad. Indeed, whenever She-Pratt and rando boldfaced names pop up in the tabs — or hog the entertainment blogosphere, in some cases — they seemingly do so just to annoy, confound and make our coworkers go, “Why are they famous?” (To this, we frequently respond: “They made a sex tape.”)

Need more examples of annoying things celebrities do in the media (besides trying to be Single White Conrad)? Look no further than these most glaring ones:

Coy pregnancy non-denials: Remember when Jennifer Lopez refused to confirm she was having twins when she was eight months pregnant (and wearing form-fitting dresses)? Now, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are playing coy, with Nick issuing a vague tweet that Mariah will make an announcement when she is GOOD AND READY. Meanwhile, he tells George Lopez all about losing his virginity to an older lady in middle school. Ha! If you’re gonna be that open on national TV, Nick, don’t skirt around the OTHER THING! Mariah is pregnant. ‘Fess up or face backlash!

Exaggerated sexcapades: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith are always bragging to the media about their sex life, that the key to a successful marriage is having “really really good sex,” they’re “really good at it,” they do it all the time, blahblahblah. This has been going on for years, and now we’re a little suspect! If you have to talk about how awesome you are all the time, are you really that awesome behind closed doors — or are you overcompensating for something? Hmmm.

Celebrities in bikinis talking about weight loss: You know when C-listers appear on the covers of celebrity weeklies wearing bikinis alongside the headline, “How I lost (fill in the blank) pounds?” SNOOZE. Pilates, schmilates. Diet pills, blech. Don’t eat this muffin, eat this carrot chip instead! Somehow these covers end us selling — celeb have been selling (sham) diet regimens for years — but we’re not buying that So-and-So refuses to indulge in a chocolate chip cookie every now and then. Someone we will take seriously: Lea Michele, who is a new-ish vegan (not saying that lifestyle is the healthiest way to go but it’s better than that horrible Blueprint Cleanse that will make you pass out).

Publicity stunts: Did Heidi and Spencer break up? We wish. As it happens, their faux marital separation is an elaborate scheme to get media attention. And it’s working! (See?). Also see: the Greyson Chance “viral” clip that made him a star but was allegedly leaked by savvy marketers. Also, PR stunts get old and boring and we see right through them. If fans can’t tell if they’re being hoodwinked or not, they lose interest (and build resentment). Exception to the rule: Joaquin Phoenix.

Mischa Barton. She doesn’t do anything except get photographed in shredded hot pants. This is the problem.

Scott Disick. Get a job! (That’s what she said).

Orlando Bloom. Stop obsessing over Miranda Kerr and read some scripts!

Lindsay Awed By Video on Her Weight

One of Lindsay Lohan’s friends sent her a YouTube link to a video someone had done about her weight fluctuations. The description reads: “This video is devoted to Lindsay Lohan. I love Lindsay; she is so talented and beautiful. It makes me sad how skinny she’s become”

Lindsay tweeted the video link, saying:

i’m about to put a clip up that i am literally crying laughing about-crying because it’s creepy..laughing because it’s odd..but both funny @ the same time… My best friend in NYC sent it 2me. it’s really just, GENIUS..& f*c*i*g AMAZING@ the same time..WOW

oh… and- who actually sat home and thought i’m even somewhat important enough to make a strange video of?? i do love massive attack though

The video looks to Lindsay’s many ups and downs in weight, some of which were due to an eating disorder. Since this is not a topic I love to talk a lot (I think it makes the situation even more unhealthy), I’ll simply say I hope Lindsay continues to work towards a healthy life balance and self-image!
