Octavia Spencer won a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress last night, so you’d think her Google news search results would be flooded with accolades for her acting. Imagine my surprise, then, when the overwhelming majority of headlines focused not on her performance in The Help, but her weight.

“I am not healthy at this weight,” Spencer told reporters backstage at the awards show, which makes me wonder which reporters were asinine enough to ask her such a sensitive question. She also spoke about a sad truth of Hollywood, namely that “when you reach a certain weight, you are less valuable…It’s a society that tells you you’re no longer valuable at a certain age…Or because of your weight.”

She did manage to insert some levity (and truth) by saying “If more women ate, they would be a lot happier. Let me tell you, I am a lot grumpier when I don’t eat.” But on a night when she’s being honored with a SAG Award—which, need I remind you, is for acting, not fitness—should Spencer really be forced to answer a barrage of questions about something so tangential to her skills as an actress? Reporters didn’t interview the skinny actresses about being skinny, so there’s no reason they should have interviewed Ms. Spencer about being a little bit chubby, let alone made that the takeaway headline about her.

I’m not saying there’s no place for a conversation about women, weight and Hollywood. On the contrary, I think our insane, often unhealthy, standards of beauty for actresses need to be addressed. But focusing solely on Octavia Spencer’s weight on a night that should’ve been about her talent and accomplishments seems a bit out of whack.

Maybe it’s because we’re so similar: we are both beloved by Jewish men who appreciate our”Jewess-with-shiksa-appeal;” we both rocked the shaved head look for awhile (and pulled it off because of our fine bone structures); and we are both pretty much banned from Israel for life.

But I think it goes deeper than that. I think you are smug, Natalie Portman. I think you are the female version of Christian Bale, with your extreme and unhealthy body fluxuations for different roles. I do not like how you signed that Hollywood list that essentially said Roman Polanski should get out of jail for free. I do not like your pseudo-politics, or your poise, or what you did to the Star Wars legacy.

But mostly, Natalie Portman, I do not like how ubiquitous you are. It’s like every time I close my eyes and think of the word “actress,” either you or Meryl Streep pop into my head. I am happy you’ve become so successful, because you do seem very smart, and can make fun of yourself (like in that Saturday Night Live video where you rap about your Ivy league education.)

But lately you’ve seemed to be losing your sure-footing, Natalie, taking your Black Swan choreographer away from his girlfriend and calling him your own, and obsessing over your love of self-flagellation in interviews. Maybe now the world will see you the way I do: as a smug, creepy bitch. Sorry, I just don’t like you.

P.S. Garden State still continues to suck.

I’m 17 years old, living in Southern Ontario. My big life plan is to graduate, escape my boring industrial town, and get out there to start livin’ my life in a big city like Toronto or Montreal. The problem is that I’m smaller than Beth Ditto, but definitely bigger than your average gal. I don’t think I have a weight problem to speak of, because I eat right and work out three times a week, but according to Hollywood standards I’m “plus-sized.”

This is going to sound weird, but being porky has never been a problem for me, because the town that I live in seems to have an abnormally high tolerance for fat girls. Imagine that! Guys who don’t care about size! Fat girls are just as popular and well-liked as skinny girls, we get invited to dances and asked out on dates just as much as skinny girls, and we never hear stuff like “Lose some weight, bitch!” or “What a lard ass!” You always hear on TV and stuff how disgusting fat chicks are, but I’ve dated lots of cute skinny boys and have never once heard the dreaded, “Baby, do you think you could lose a few pounds for me? It’s kinda gross.” (Although that could have something to do with the fact that if anyone said that to me, I’d kick their ass.) I don’t think it has anything to do with the rumor that fatties are better fucks than skinnies, I think people are just generally more accepting here. What the fuck is up with that?

Aside from a possible breast reduction, I have absolutely no desire to lose weight. Is this going to bite my in the ass when I move to an exciting big city? Is everybody going to hate me and think I’m disgusting? Do people really hate fat chicks as much as TV says they do? Should I stay in my chunk-lovin’ hometown?
