What’s The Deal With Zac Efron’s New ‘YOLO’ Tattoo?

Is it a gang nickname? Viral marketing for a new chocolate energy drink? The moniker of a long-lost pet? Nope! Zac Efron‘s new tattoo, the word “YOLO” inked onto his hand, stands for “you only live once.”

The New Year’s Eve star (one of only 200 — collect the all!) recently debuted this brand new branding, his second tattoo. Zac also has a par of feathers inked onto his bicep. I wonder what lead to this new design… “You only live once, so might as well get another tattoo?” How meta. Here’s a closer look:

Chick Flick Check List: New Year’s Eve

Gary Marshall‘s new celebrity montage movie New Year’s Eve is basically an extended infomercial for Mike Bloomberg‘s Times Square. The movie contains more celebrities than Jason Sudeikis‘ bed during SNL‘s off season. Depending on your feelings for weird celebrity pairings, you will either ignore this movie, go see it with your girlfriends, or confuse it for Valentines Day and accidentally watch it on cable for 20 minutes a year from now.

And that’s OK with Gary Marshall, who these days seems more interested in how many people (and family members) he can fit into a film than actually creating a coherent plot line or emotional tension. But should you hate watch this movie or skip it? Check out today’s Chick Flick Check List to find out.

New Year’s Eve’s Chick Flick Check List Rating: 66

Likability of the lead: 5/10
No one’s really on screen long enough for the audience to develop any sincere feelings about their struggles and story arc. Also, this movie has a built in self-destruct time of midnight. Since you know everything will get sorted out by then, it’s more a countdown to see which celebrities will make out with whom.

Chemistry Between The Leads: 5/10
It’s hard to develop any sort of chemistry with your scene partner when you’ve got 2.5 minutes of the audience’s attention at a clip. Though New Year’s Eve does a good job keeping Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron on screen long enough to give you hope that he will her a Breakfast Club-esque makeover and introduce her to everyone on his wrestling team. Unfortunately, Molly Ringwald never shows up to give her a lesson in lip gloss application. Downer.

Plot/Script: 5/10
There are so many people in this movie that a few of them have to shoulder their way into actually having speaking parts. Not only did Alyssa Milano, Sarah Paulson and Carla Giugino get shafted from the poster, but Greg Kinnear never even made it into the final cut of the movie. There are a lot of moments that are hastily thrown together. And Marshall doesn’t even worry about it. When you have this many people in a movie, you don’t need montages to get the plot moving. You just literally make the actors run through the screen to get their story lines tied up before the closing credits.

Chance of wringing tears out of viewers: 6/10
Halle Berry gets a little teary eyed moment, and Robert DeNiro plays a cancer patient! If you’re an easy cryer, they might get a few drops out of you. But there’s not enough time to pay attention to anyone in particular to care too much.

Wardrobe: 8/10
There are plenty of hot dresses and sequins and tuxedos in this movie to keep everyone entertained. And depending on your feelings about Sophia Vergara‘s breasts, you will either get a pleasant or unpleasant surprise towards the end of the movie.

Zac Efron Bulked Up A Ton To Play An Iraqi War Vet In Nicholas Sparks’ The Lucky One

Do you recognize the voice and body in Nicholas Sparks‘ new movie The Lucky One? You might be surprised to learn that it’s High School Musical star Zac Efron, who put quite a bit of muscle on his scrawny dancer’s frame to play Iraqi war vet Logan Thibault.

At first, the plot sounds like the Channing Tatum/Amanda Seyfried romance Dear John: Guy makes it through war thanks to a pretty girl back home. Except in this movie, the girl (Taylor Schilling) doesn’t know Zac’s character. He inexplicably finds a photo from her — with the note Stay safe x – in a warzone, and relies on that during his time overseas. (In fact, that sounds more like Jarhead.)

When he tracks down the girl, there’s a misunderstanding and she hires him to fix up her old house. Also, she has a kid to whom he becomes a surrogate father. Do you think she’ll feel violated once he reveals his true intentions for tracking her down? (Answer: Yes, and it’ll be crazy-dramatic.)

I think I prefer the Nicholas Sparks movies where there’s another guy in the picture, so to speak: The Notebook was complicated when James Marsden appeared as a rival for Rachel McAdams‘ affections, whereas the cancer plot in The Last Song made it even cheesier. Taylor’s babydaddy might not prove the best rival for Zac, but the plot looks like an improvement over some of his other movie adaptations.

But the movie I’m really psyched for isn’t even a Sparks novel: The Vow!

Reddit‘s AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads are often informative, enriching, and And every once in a while, they’re incredibly juicy. In a recent AMA, a 19-year-old woman currently living in New York City revealed that she is a former child star who did a lot of background work on Disney and Nickelodeon shows in 2010. That means she got to run in the same circles as Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and more—and boy, does she have some unflattering stories! Although she shares gossip on the familiar faces above, the worst one seems to be former Sonny with a Chance star Demi Lovato.

The user, thedictatorscut, couldn’t share much personal information, including her parents’ jobs, for fear of revealing her identity. Ostensibly the Reddit moderators approved her, since the thread makes no mention of her being a fake. So while we’ll take this with a grain of salt, let’s also move forward into the gossip, yeah?

To start off, thedictatorscut can confirm what we’ve long believed, that the JoBros’ purity ring act was fake:

Not to get too into detail (because this is one that could actually give me away), but yeah, no, they let their success go to their heads way too quickly. None of those guys had any business wearing a promise ring, hahaha. (And I’m not anti-sex, don’t get me wrong! I’m just anti-having-sex-with-older-women-and-lying-about-it-to-seem-like-good-Christians.) Joe was probably the worst of the three.

But because it hasn’t been asked yet: Zac Efron? Very professional. And retina-searingly beautiful.

Older women, huh? How Gossip Girl of you. And though she volunteers the compliments about Zac, the poster doesn’t say much either way about his ex and fellow High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens. (The only mention is when someone asks “How do I bang Miley Cyrus?” and she answers, Work with her. Or else just move to LA and become kind of a gross hipster. I dunno, man. Doesn’t Vanessa Hudgens seem like a more reasonable goal?)

Now, on to the big boys—or, as it may be, the big girls.

Celebrities, they’re just like us! They drink too much and get caught looking like all they want is a warm bed, two Advil, and for everyone to just go away. Okay, fine, Zac Efron is wearing an expensive suit and being chauffeured around town while I end most nights looking like I’ve been sleeping at the bus station. Celebrities, they’re somewhat sort of just like us.

Zac was snapped out and about in London, two days after his 24th birthday. He partied the night away at The Box club in Soho before heading home — so that’s the explanation for the drunkenness. No word on what’s up with the mustache.

Zac Efron’s Russian Billionaire Fan Treated Him To A $100,000 Bottle Of Champagne

We think someone’s got a cru-ush! A Russian billionaire (he is unnamed, probably to protect him from this cute but embarrassing story) was partying it up in Chicago’s Board Room nightclub when he saw that Zac Efron and Heather Graham had come in.

Obviously this guy was a fan of High School Musical, or maybe Charlie St. Cloud, because he generously ordered a $100,000 bottle of champagne to be delivered to Zac’s table. His own guests weren’t so lucky; the billionaire spent “only” $12,550 on their assorted drinks.

How do we have all the numbers? Because someone nabbed a copy of the bill, of course! (Side note: The first time through I misread this and thought the billionaire was also a rapper called Armand de Brignac Nebuchadnezzar, or the Ace of Spades. Turns out that’s the name of the pricey champagne.)

No word on if the billionaire ever outed himself to Zac and Heather, who are in town shooting a movie that used to be known as Homeland, and is currently untitled. But we enjoyed this silly reenactment of the encounter from Deadspin.

Oh, and Zac’s face above? That’s his Mr. Burns impression: “Yeess, yeess! Now, what other billionaires can I lure in with my impish good looks and dance skills? Papa needs a new set of wheels…”

In her new movie The Paperboy, Nicole Kidman will star as a woman in love with a death row inmate played by John Cusack. Which means that, contrary to what these on-set photos indicate, she won’t be playing a Barbie Doll. Zac Efron‘s going to be in this flick as well, in the role of an intrepid young newspaper reporter — which means that he won’t be playing a Ken Doll. Occam’s Razor, you have failed me.

The Paperboy‘s currently shooting in New Orleans and is set for a 2012 release. Based on a 1995 novel of the same name, it also stars Matthew McConaughey — once again as a non-plastic human. (I just spelled “McConaughey” without looking it up… prize?)
