The news broke today, after creator David Shore pushed the network to tell him one way or the other. At the end of 2011, both parties had agreed to push off the decision til after January 1, but Shore, obviously sensing some unease, decided that he’d rather have advance warning to prepare an adequate series finale for May.

We knew that the show was nearing its last legs when series regular Lisa Edelstein left last year, but it’s definite now that the network has confirmed the decision. While it’s difficult to see such a brilliant show go off the air, it’s worth nothing that it had been losing steam for some time now, with cast shake-ups that couldn’t restore the snappy repartee of the first few seasons, and the writers throwing the cantankerous Dr. House into increasingly unrealistic situations (rehab, jail, and so forth). We’ll always remember the good times, but it’s time.

We can always count on E!’s Kristin dos Santos to get a statement from the creators; here’s what David Shore, Katie Jacobs, and star Hugh Laurie had to say to fans:

After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.  By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.

The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years – but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved.

Since it began, House has aspired to offer a coherent and satisfying world in which everlasting human questions of ethics and emotion, logic and truth, could be examined, played out, and occasionally answered.  This sounds like fancy talk, but it really isn’t.  House has, in its time, intrigued audiences around the world in vast numbers, and has shown that there is a strong appetite for television drama that relies on more than prettiness or gun play.

But now that time is drawing to a close.  The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature;  he should never be the last one to leave the party.  How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.

The producers can never sufficiently express their gratitude to the hundreds of dedicated artists and technicians who have given so generously of their energy and talent to make House the show it has been – and perhaps will continue to be for some time, on one cable network or another.

The makers of House would also like to thank Fox Broadcasting and Universal Television for supporting the show with patience, imagination and large quantities of good taste.  The Studio-As-Evil-Adversary is one of the many clichés that House has managed to avoid, and for that the cast and crew are deeply grateful.

Lastly, the audience:  some have come and some have gone, obviously.  This is to be expected in the life of any show.  But over the course of the last eight years, the producers of House have felt immensely honored to be the subject of such close attention by an intelligent, discriminating, humane and thoughtful – not to mention numerous – audience.  Even the show’s detractors have been flattering in their way.

Making the show has felt like a lively and passionate discussion about as many different subjects as could possibly be raised in 177 hours. The devotion and generosity of our viewers has been marvelous to behold.

So, finally, everyone at House will bid farewell to the audience and to each other with more than a few tears, but also with a deep feeling of gratitude for the grand adventure they have been privileged to enjoy for the last eight years.  If the show lives on somewhere, with somebody, as a fond memory, then that is a precious feat, of which we will always be proud.

Everybody Lies.

We can only hope that Shore and Jacobs go on — together or separately — to create an equally compelling, intelligent, snarky show. Because I do believe that House as a series showed audiences that they could dive into a fast-paced, technical-jargon-heavy show and still find its heart.

After the Patriots lost, Todd Krim tweeted, Sorry @TheConnorCruise maybe next year!!! Seems like playful ribbing, right? Not to uber-sensitive Connor, who sent Todd a furious text. Thankfully, Todd shared that text, and the following correspondence, with the New York Post‘s Page Six:

Connor: That was a gay ass [bleeping] tweet… U don’t say [bleep] like that about my team the second they lose. Low.

Todd: Umm ok… Dude I was [bleeping] joking.

Connor: That was [bleep]ed… Idgaf.

Yes, he used the little-known acronym for “I don’t give a fuck.” Teenage drama is so intense!

What’s bizarre is that after the Patriots’ loss in the Super Bowl, Connor posted this totally reasonable tweet: Ahh this hurts. But the Giants played a better game and my hat is off to them. Better luck next year #Patriots4Life So maybe he’d been having problems with Todd beforehand. Regardless, Todd announced that he’ll no longer be working with Tom Cruise’s son, despite Connor’s (new) publicist-approved apology:

“What I texted was unacceptable. It is not a reflection of who I am and what I feel, and it certainly won’t happen again.”

However, now Todd’s turned the other cheek, and is even scolding others for drumming up more drama. Today he clarified,

Everyone @theconnorcruise apologized to me for his texts which I accept so the matter is closed as far as I’m concerned. Let’s move on!

And when another user mocked Connor for needing “Daddy’s” protection, Todd added,

@JustinABrenner Justin please drop this subject. I’d really appreciate it.

Guess he doesn’t want to dwell on his (totally awesome) bitchslapping of an entitled celebrity kid.

After 5 years away from the show, Maya Rudolph is returning to 30 Rock on February 18th to host Saturday Night Live. As one of my favorite SNL actresses ever, I couldn’t be more excited for her. Despite having some of the funniest recurring characters in the series history, she’s usually forgotten when bigger names like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig get tossed around.

They might have more name recognition and street cred, but Maya’s impressions of people like Whitney Houston, Donatella Versace and Beyonce usually have me laughing hysterically.

So since I’ve always thought of her as an SNL underdog, I’m happy to see that her career’s starting to really take off. In 2011  she not only starred in the hit movie Bridesmaids, but she also landed the role as the Oprah-like character Eva on Up All Night. While I thought she was underutilized in Bridesmaids, I think she’s using her talents perfectly on Up All Night.

So in honor of her blossoming career and more importantly, finally returning to host SNL, I present a few of my favorite Maya Rudolph SNL moments.

I want you to know I saw the photos today. Those photos from that “fashion” shoot you did with Uncle Terry. Are you proud of yourself for that? I could totally see part of your nipple in two of them. It sort of creeped me out, because that’s not something I ever thought we would do. I also never thought our boobs would be so saggy at the age of 25. Have you not been wearing a bra or something? Shall I send you one from the past? I can get stamps from mom.

Every time I feel like we’re on the right track you go and do something like this. I’m not sure how many times I’ve politely suggested you stay away from those types who will lead you back down the rocky road to Crack Ville, but you refuse to listen. Do you think Terry cares about you as much as I do? No. No one cares about you, rather us, as much as I do. They all just want to exploit us, have their way with us, then throw us away! Even mom! Look at what she let Ali do to her face! She’s going to look like Joan Rivers by the time she’s our age… it totally sucks.

Look, I get that as a child star we were bound to have our ups and downs. It was almost fated to be a mess, but this is just ridiculous. I feel like you’re not even trying anymore.

Do you have any more movies lined up for us? Do you really think any studio is going to get the necessary insurance to put up with your antics? I’ve done my research on this topic, and I know for a fact that Robert Downey, Jr was not insurable for years because of his issues with drugs and jail — just like us, LiLo! Sure he’s doing well now, but he’s 46! We already look 46! If we have to wait two decades to be taken seriously as an actress again, we’re going to look 66! Do you see where I’m going with this? Actually, maybe we can get him to do an intervention, now that I think about it. We could have E! cover it. I bet they’d pay big bucks for that. I’ll have mom call him tonight.

I don’t want to tell you how to live your life. I just want you to think about me; think about us. Think about what we were, all the promise we had in our fingertips — we were really something back then. I mean, we were in a movie with Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey! Do you think that’s ever going to happen again? Not at this rate, Lindsay.

Just think about it for ol’ time sake, won’t you?

Hughes, unlike many before and those who would follow, had particular insight into the teenage mind. In actress, Molly Ringwald, he found a muse, and it was in casting her in the majority of his teen films that audiences found a real connection. Here was a man who actually got what teenagers were thinking, their concerns with cliques, popularity and, of course, unrequited love.

Although Hughes also made a name for himself with such movies as the Home Alone franchise and a few others, it’s his teen films for which he’ll be remembered most. Had he not passed away suddenly from a heart attack while walking in New York City in 2009, he would have been 62 next week.

Even if you’re not old enough to remember Hughes, his influences are everywhere. Director Judd Apatow has acknowledged the impact Hughes has had on his career, as well as the feeling that a part of his childhood had died the day Hughes passed away. He was truly an American icon and forever set the bar on teen films.

It may be hard to conceive that no matter what your age, you may not be familiar with the works of John Hughes. But in case you do fall into that category, let me give you a brief lesson on six of his best movies.

DO: Be open to compromise

Jo has really turned things around in just a few episodes: He and Kailyn decide which weekdays he’s going to come over to her place to spend time with Isaac, and he even tells her that he’s willing to drop the child support appeal. Now that he must feel empowered by being in Isaac’s life more, the kid is less of an obligation and more of a joy. As he says, “He makes my day.”

DON’T: Disregard your partner’s instincts

That said, Kailyn’s real parenting partner is boyfriend Jordan, so she should listen when he says he has misgivings about Jo suddenly being in their lives a lot more often. But Kailyn isn’t willing to take him seriously… probably because she’s having feelings for Jo again. It is mature of them to talk about it: Kailyn asks, ”Do you trust me to be here by myself with Jo and Isaac?” But since Jordan’s answer is no, that’s worth more discussion.

DON’T: Flirt in front of your kid

What seems to be a good rule of thumb is to keep things as stable as possible for your kids. That means Kailyn and Jo awkwardly flirting in front of little Isaac is a bad idea. If nothing else, it’ll confuse the hell out of him to see his separated parents being all lovey-dovey.

But can we pause and laugh at how Kailyn asks, apropos of nothing, “How’s your love life?” It’s a quote from The Room to the word, which makes me want to make image macros with Room quotes now.

DON’T: Have your ex stay over

Come on, Kailyn! This is bad judgment on so many levels.

Last night’s Glee was disturbingly meta: Just as Will Schuester finds his glee club reinvigorated by Spanish teacher David, I have to break it to Matthew Morrison that I want to see him replaced with Ricky Martin immediately. Rather than be a cheesy, useless guest star, Ricky — as toothy, sexy David — was a much-needed shot of energy to this flagging show. In terms of the episode’s songs, there weren’t any automatic classics, but there also weren’t as many duds as in past weeks. A cool twist is that each song is bilingual, whether a mash-up or if you put LMFAO through Google Translate.

“La Cucaracha”

This shouldn’t even count as a song, since it started off the episode — so, it was before Will’s assignment to the kids — and featured Will’s paranoid inner monologue. Everything about it was just ghastly. And even though that’s what the writers intended, I’m still giving it a bad grade.

“Sexy and I Know It”

I was a little unnerved by all the odd dancing, but it’s obvious that David on-screen and Ricky off-screen inspired the kids to play around with new moves. He’s obviously in his element here—really, it is so good to see Ricky Martin singing and dancing again! He’s a great mix of playful and, as you’ll see later, soulful.

Grade: A-

“Don’t Wanna Lose You”

Amber Riley sang beautifully here, but I’m already exhausted by the Sam/Mercedes/Shane love triangle. Poor Shane seems like just a plot device here, as an obstacle put in place to make things more frustrating for Sam and Mercedes; so far we haven’t gotten any reason to actually care about how he feels about Mercedes. Plus, it’s not like he was around for her big number; what kind of boyfriend is that? But kudos to Amber for tackling the highest percentage of Spanish per tonight’s songs without mangling the language at all.

Grade: B

Well pull my baby doll dress and platform flip flops out of the closet, because the ’90s are officially back this week! Not only did Monica and Brandy reunite for a “The Boy is Mine” follow-up, but ’90s pop star Mandy Moore has a comedy pilot that just got picked up by ABC. The show’s going to follow a newlywed couple as they open a hip restaurant in a small town.

Now I know, Mandy Moore’s been around since the ’90s. In fact she’s apparently even been guest starring on Grey’s Anatomy.  But I think we can all agree that she was very much a late ’90s pop star. She emerged at the same time as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the forever pregnant Jessica Simpson and I’ll always group her that way in my head. Basically anyone who’s music I played at my Bat Mitzvah makes my late ’90s pop star list. So yes to everyone reading this who attended my Bat Mitzvah, Eiffel 65 is ALSO on this list.

Since the ’90s however, Mandy Moore has broken into acting and starred in a few decent-to-watch-on-a-Sunday-afternoon films. The only remarkable thing about each movie was that she sang in almost every single one. (Maybe not every single one, a hasty IMDB search shows about 4. But still, that’s kind of a lot considering she’s only been in 14 major movies.) Which leads me to the conclusion that part of her contract must include that the producers try their hardest to find a way to squeeze in a song of hers.

Sometimes, like in Tangled, the singing makes sense as part of the plot. Other times, such as in Princess Diaries, it comes out of nowhere and makes absolutely no sense. Does anyone else remember being totally thrown off when she started singing “Stupid Cupid” on the beach in that movie?

Anyway, I can only assume that since she has a lead role in this new show, she’ll be offered the opportunity to sing. So what you think? Will she sing the theme song? Or will it be more Glee-like (Or I guess Smash is the new hit reference) where she’ll burst into song spontaneously?

That’s all she would say on the subject, and there’s been no corroboration from the other Spice Girls. Interestingly, most of them are working on clothing lines: Emma Bunton with children’s clothes, Victoria Beckham having stars like Michelle Williams wear her designs, and Geri Halliwell resurrecting her famous Union Jack dress. (Melanie Chisholm is working on her solo career.)

Geri did speak about her career goals recently, but when she mentioned the same Diamond Jubilee, there was nothing charged behind her words: Talking about the iconic Union Jack design, she said, “We have the Olympics [coming up], we have the Diamond Jubilee; we have a lot to feel good about.” When asked about the Spice Girls musical, she said, “The storyline is brilliant, of course fantastic music. Hopefully it will make everyone smile and relive the past.” She predicts it’ll come out at the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013. If anything, the only hints from Geri were about her own solo album.

So, it could be that Mel B is just trying to get attention by stirring up rumors of a Spice Girls reunion. But let’s put on our optimistic hats and assume that there is some grand performance in the works. If that’s the case, then I agree with E! Online that she’s probably talking about rehearsals; after all, next month is already March, and it’s reasonable that something celebrating the Queen of England would require three months of rehearsal.

Plus, there are two parts to her tweet that have me thinking this could be legit: For one, she says “missed them all soooo much” about the girls. Now, it’s not surprising that the ladies stay in touch over Twitter and in-person; you can find a smattering of photos online of them out and about getting dinner and such. But the tweet seems to refer to something more than just seeing the girls, i.e., actually working together again.

Furthermore, Mel ends the tweet with “girlpower all the way!”—why invoke the group’s catchphrase/mantra if you’re just talking about the good old days?
